Bay of Islands: Paradise for Water Lovers and Hikers

PicturePhoto: Fraser Clements
Have you seen a dolphin show with jumping and flipping dolphins that is choreographed by the instincts of the wild dolphins? You will find this show in the waters off Paihia in the Bay of Islands at the northern end of New Zealand!

Rent a kayak or join a kayak tour to cruise out in the bay and paddle to your own sandy beach for the day. Along the way, you may be followed by curious dolphins and if you’re lucky the dolphins will treat you to a show of their athleticism with jumps and flips! The dolphins don’t seem to be shy and often join kayakers as well as commercial tour boats for parts of the journey in the bay.

Common and bottlenose dolphins are common inhabitants of the bay and they are commonly sighted throughout the year. Anytime of year is a good time to visit New Zealand! Orca whales are frequently seen in Bay of Islands as well during the months of April through October.

The View From The Top!
When not on the water, get the best view of the surrounding lush forests and dreamy islands from the Paihia View Track that starts from School Road in Paihia.

The well-packed trail meanders uphill through lush ferns and shady native bush while following a creek, offering shade and cool breezes on warm days. The track is short, only 1.5 km and getting to the splendid view at the top takes about 30-40 minutes.
You know you’re at the top when you can look around in all directions and your jaw drops at the exquisite view! To the north, you can see the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, to the southwest, the Opua Forest, and to the east, take in the beauty of the bay and islands!

After you head down the track and back into the township of Paihia, stop in to
Charlotte’s Kitchen at the end of the pier for truly delectable dining, and great views, of course! If you’re not quite ready for a meal and need a treat instead, find a Tip Top Ice Cream banner waving and pop inside to try New Zealand’s most popular ice cream brand.
