My favorite time in Alaska. Going wild! ![]() We spent a week in Alaska. We caught big fish! We saw amazing scenery and wildlife. Alaska is increbily beautiful. For all the sights we saw, places we visited, and people we met, the most special time filled with memories was an overnight in a backcountry cabin with our own private beach on Resurrection Bay. Much like a lot of our week on the Kenai Peninsula, it was raining. Life goes on. We jumped off the platform of the water taxi and onto our own private beach for the next 24 hours. It was beautiful. It was quiet. Back from the beach, we were surrounded by a lush temperate rainforest. ![]() Our cabin for the night was a cozy one room affair with a loft and beautiful artwork on the walls. What more do you need for a family of 4? A bathroom, I guess, which was available about 10 feet away outside. The cabin was only for eating and sleeping. We were there for adventure! We prepped two double kayaks, got or fishing gear ready, and took off from the beach for hours of fishing in the rain. This is where the magic happened! We were together, on Resurrection Bay, with no one else around. The sky was a blanket of clouds with a constant drizzle of rain and the water was steely grey and calm. It was wild. For safety and ease of fishing, we kept the two kayaks close together. We didn't have to go far from our beach for the fishing action to begin! The kids caught rockfish, black bass and little lingcod. Eric and I caught fish, too, when we weren't helping the kids with their lines or re-baiting. We found one spot that was non-stop action! We all laughed when we all had fish on the line at the same time. And this happened more than once! We couldn't stop laughing at a little black bass that kept coming back to the lure, even though the lure was out of the water, that bass jumped out of the water trying to get it! We were so busy fishing, paddling, and having fun together, I never took a picture. We were out there for hours. Talking, fishing, story-telling, making jokes. It was just plain fun. ![]() The secret to keeping everyone happy while fishing from kayaks in the rain? Good gear! Rubber boots, solid rain pants, rubber rain jackets, solid rain hats with a wide brim, and waterproof gloves. When you don't feel the water on your hands and you don't have rain falling on your face, you hardly notice it's raining at all! The evening was spent playing cards by lantern light and warming up with soup and a hot dinner. Warm beds made for a good night's sleep. In the morning we were treated to a low tide (big tide changes in Alaska, 20ft+!) and the chance for tide pool exploration. I love hearing the kids saying, "Whoa!" and "Look at this, you gotta come look at this!" The wonder and amazement that comes from exploring the world around you can't be beat. When we jumped back on our water taxi that afternoon, we took with us memories of joy, playing wild, and having fun together as a family.
